No. 2 Heavies Begin 2024 Season at Lake Carnegie Saturday

PRINCETON – The No. 2 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Team welcomes the No. 17 Drexel Dragons, No. 18 Georgetown Hoyas, and No. 23 Temple Owls to Lake Carnegie on Saturday (Mar. 30).

"There is still buzz from the success of last year and the fall," said Lachlan Toovey. "Everyone has worked hard over the winter, and we have come out a new team. We want to continue to raise the caliber of the squad and push the limits. We're excited to see how far we have come but are even more excited to know this is just the beginning."

2,000m races begin at 8 a.m. with the first varsity. The full schedule is below.
8:00 AM - First Varsity
8:10 AM - Third Varsity
8:20 AM - Second Varsity
8:30 AM - Fourth/Fifth Varsity

There also be 1,000m events later in the morning that begin after the 4V/5V race.

Princeton is coming off a 2023 season that saw the 1V collect a bronze medal at the IRA Championships.

The first varsity was fourth at the 500m in the Grand Final, tightly bunched with Washington and Yale with California out front. The Tigers remained in fourth at the 1,000m, behind Yale by almost a second for a medal.
Princeton did not let up.

Over the next 500m, the Tigers ripped off a 1:22.7 split, 1.6 seconds quicker than Yale to move into third place. The boat outpaced Yale in the final 500m, earning a bronze medal (5:34.88) behind California (5:31.71) and Washington (5:32.96).

The Tigers' last 1V medal was also a bronze in 2016. The third-place finish is six spots higher than last year and five spots better than 2021.

Three of the team's five All-Americans return this season in Theo Bell (first team), Marcus Chute and Nick Taylor (second team).

Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year. Mead helped the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017. He also helped the four to third at 2023 World Rowing Cup II regatta.

The Tigers will also have three alumni racing in the Oxford-Cambridge Boatrace this weekend. Jelmer Bennema '23 will race for Oxford's blue boat while Sebastian Benzecry '20 is the Cambridge president and will race in the school's blue boat.

Jacob Intrater '23 is in the Cambridge lightweight eight while Annie Anezakis '21 of the women's lightweight crew will race for the Oxford's women's eight.

The men's Boat Race was first held in 1829 and has been held annually since 1856 while the women's Boat Race was first rowed in 1927 and has been ran annually since 1964.
