Baseball Drops 13-Inning Heartbreaker To Navy, 7-6

ANNAPOLIS – The Princeton Baseball team dropped a heartbreaker, 7-6, in 13 innings to the Navy Midshipmen on Saturday afternoon.

Victor Isquierdo's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 13th was the game-winner.

Kyle Vinci's RBI single up the middle opened the scoring in the top of the first while a two-run error made it 3-0 Princeton before the Midshipmen came to bat.

A sacrifice fly got the home team on the board in the bottom of the first while a pickoff attempt added Navy's second run in the third.

A three-run double by Eduardo Diaz put Navy in front, 5-3, in the fourth stanza but Vinci countered with a two-run single in the next at-bat for Princeton.

Izquierdo's run-scoring double in the seventh gave the Midshipmen a 6-5 advantage, but the Tigers answered with an RBI knock from Jake Koonin in the eighth.

Princeton's best scoring chance in extra innings came in the 12th as it had a runner on third base with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Vinci finished with two hits, two runs and three RBI. Andrew D'Alessio struck out five in 4 1/3 innings of relief work while Jacob Faulkner had four punchouts in 4 2/3 innings. This game was the longest contest by innings for Princeton since April of 2014.

The Tigers and Midshipmen's second game of the doubleheader was postponed until Sunday. The two will play seven innings in game one and nine in game two. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
