April 20, 2024 | Baseball
PRINCETON – The Princeton Baseball Team split its doubleheader with the Penn Quakers at Clarke Field on Saturday afternoon.
Princeton 3, Penn 2
The Tigers got two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first, but a ground out ended the threat.
Penn's Jarrett Pokrovsky led off the second with a home run just over the fence in left field.
The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but couldn't push across a run. Jake Koonin's sacrifice fly tied the score in the home half of the fourth.
A throwing error put the Quakers back in front, 2-1, in the sixth. Jake Bold's sacrifice fly tied the game in the eighth frame.
Jacob Faulkner had a 1-2-3 stanza in the top of the ninth, retiring nine of the 10 hitters he faced.
In the bottom of the ninth, Koonin led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before coming around to score as the first baseman was slow reacting to him racing home.
Will Sword tied his career high with nine punchouts in six innings, allowing just two earned runs. Faulkner corralled three strikeouts in three relief frames in the victory.
Penn 12, Princeton 7
A balk and bases loaded walk gave Penn the first two runs of the contest in the second inning. In the next frame, an RBI groundout made it 3-0 Quakers.
A fielding error allowed Matt Scannell to score in the third for the Tigers' first run.
Penn scored six runs combined in the fifth and sixth stanzas to improve its advantage to eight, 9-1, highlighted by two-run home runs by Wyatt Henseler and Calvin Brown.
After an RBI single from Scannell, Nick DiPietrantonio tripled, clearing the bases to make it 10-5 in the seventh. Penn answered in the next at-bat with two runs to push its lead back to seven.
DiPietrantonio set a new career high with four hits as he blasted a two-run home run in the ninth, giving him five RBI.
Princeton and Penn finish the series Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
