PRINCETON – The No. 2 Princeton Heavyweight Rowing Team makes the trip to Annapolis, Md., to take on the No. 17 Navy Midshipmen for the Navy-Princeton Cup.
A Cup that has been decided since 1913, Princeton has not lost a regular season race to Navy since 1993, a span of 23 races.
Last week, Princeton swept the day on Lake Carnegie against Drexel, Georgetown and Temple. The 1V (5:43.0) collected a 17.2-second decision over Drexel (6:00.2) while Georgetown was right behind the Dragons at 6:00.5. Temple was fourth at 6:15.2.
Princeton's 2V crossed the line at 6:03.4 in front of Georgetown by 7.7 seconds (6:11.7). Temple (6:18.1) and Drexel (6:22.2) rounded out the race. The 3V also earned a decisive victory (6:10.3) ahead of Drexel (6:25.7), Georgetown (6:29.2) and Temple (6:33.6). The home team's 4V (6:28.4) collected a win in the 4V/5V event by 14.3 seconds.
"This past weekend was a good first step to our season, "said Connor Neill. "We have a lot to improve on and I am pumped to see where we take our speed. There is plenty of speed to gain especially the blade work moving through the front end so that we can master the top quarter."
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year. Mead helped the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017. He also helped the four to third at 2023 World Rowing Cup II regatta.
Sebastain Benzecry '20 helped Cambridge to a victory in the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boatrace by 3 ½ lengths last weekend. Jacob Intrater '23 lead the Cambridge lightweight eight to a win as well.
