Fantinelli Shares Medalist Honors; Men's Golf Wins Team Title At Princeton Invite
April 07, 2024 | Men's Golf
Riccardo Fantinelli put on a show at Springdale in Sunday's Final Round of the Princeton Invitational, shooting a 65 (-6) which ties the modern program record for low score and low score to par since GolfStat started tracking these records in 1993-94. That round vaulted him from 11th place entering the final 18 holes into a share of medalist honors alongside Howard's Everett Whitten, Jr.
The medalist honor is the third individual medalist finish for Fantinelli over his career – he previously won the Ivy League Championship and The Prestige last season as a freshman.
Princeton entered two teams in its home tournament, and Princeton (A) was victorious with a score of 843 (-9) after rounds of 287-281-275 which was 13 shots ahead of second-place Howard. This marks the second consecutive tournament win for the Tigers who won the Golden Horseshoe invite last time out.
The two consecutive team wins have the Tigers in prime form heading into the 2024 Ivy League Championships at Watchung Valley on April 19-21 where the Tigers will enter as defending champions.
The Tigers were third after the opening round but improved their team score by six shots in Round Two to enter the final round two behind Howard. On Sunday, Princeton's A entry was the only group under par collectively as they shot a nine-under 275 as a group.
The sun was out on both days, but the first 36 holes were played in challenging and windy conditions. The Tigers adjusted well throughout the first day, as eight of the 10 players in the field improved their score in Round Two – led by Jackson Fretty who fired a five-under 66 which was seven shots better than his opening round.
Fretty had seven birdies in his second round, including six in a span of 10 holes to reach as high as -6 for his round before a bogey on his last hole of the day to end the opening 36 holes tied for fifth. The 66 ties for his lowest career round, a score he has achieved four times in his career and three times this season.
On Sunday, Fretty followed up with a -2 69 to finish tied for third and one shot behind the leaders.
On most days, Fretty's heater in the second round would be the highlight but instead it was a freshman who had the most memorable moment of the day as Charlie Palmer recorded a hole in one in the par-3 13th hole in his first competitive round at Springdale as a Tiger. The ace from the rookie helped settle him in as he was two-under on the back nine to rally from a +6 start to the round.
William Huang was on point in his first round, carding four birdies and an eagle en route to a 67 (-4) before finishing T9 at +1 overall.
