No. 3 Heavies Race At IRA National Championships This Weekend at Mercer Lake
May 30, 2024 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON – The No. 3 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Team finishes the 2024 season with the IRA Championships this weekend at Mercer Lake.
Action starts on Friday with heats beginning at 8 a.m. Semifinals go off on Saturday with Grand Finals on Sunday.
The Tigers' 1V comes in at No. 3 in the IRCA Varsity Poll while the 2V and 3V sit at No. 2.
"The focus throughout our entire season was winning the Rowe Cup at Sprints," said Connor Neill. "This will continue to be the focus at IRAs. Our boat has a lot to prove after the loss by a deck at Sprints and we are looking to turn that margin around this weekend."
2024 has already been one of the best seasons in program history as it's the first time ever that Princeton's 1V and 2V each went undefeated during the same season. The Tigers' 1V has had a perfect regular season just five times (1881, 1997, 1999, 2006) in the 152-year history of the program.
At Easterns Sprints, four of five boats rowed in their respective grand finals with three winning their heats. The 1V was edged by the slimmest of margins at the finish line by Brown who won the 1V by 0.081 seconds in one of the closest finishes in Sprints history.
The Tigers secured gold in the 2V with a winning time of 5:34.498 which was 2.7 seconds ahead of runner-up Harvard and 4.2 seconds clear of third-place Dartmouth. The win is the first gold medal in the 2V for Princeton since back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018 and gives the Tigers medals in 10 of the last 11 2V races at Sprints (4 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze).
For the 3V, the Grand Final was almost an "All-Ivy" affair and the Tigers bested four other Ivy foes in addition to Boston University to secure the gold medal. Princeton's winning time of 5:39.776 was almost 2.5 seconds clear of runner-up Harvard to claim the first gold medal in the 3V for the Tigers since back-to-back golds in 2015 and 2016.
Two golds and a silver led to Princeton earning the Rowe Cup for the first time since 2016 and the 10th time in program history.
Last year at IRAs, the 1V picked up a bronze medal, the boat's first medal since 2016. The third-place finish was six spots higher than 2022 and five spots better than 2021.
The team just missed the podium at IRAs, earning fourth place in the Ten Eyck Standings behind California (288), Washington (253) and Yale (253). That was a four-spot jump from 2022.
Princeton's last gold medal at IRAs was the 3V in 2016. The Tigers' 3V also collected the top time in 2003. The 1V's last gold came in 1998 which was also the same year the team last won the Ten Eyck trophy.
Last month, Tom George '18 and Oliver Wynne-Griffith won the Men's Pair gold at the European Rowing Championships. That duo also won the gold at the World Rowing Cup I in April and World Rowing Cup II in Switzerland.
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He led the United States 4- to gold at the World Rowing Cup II last week while Tim Masters '15 and Australia just missed the podium in fourth.
Jonas Juel '22 helped Norway's 4x to gold in the final Olympic Qualification Regatta to collect a spot in the Olympics this summer in Paris.
