Harrington Deals Shutout as Tigers Get Past Dartmouth to Open Ivy Tournament
May 08, 2024 | Softball
Over two games during the Princeton softball team's regular-season series against Dartmouth in mid-April, Meghan Harrington pitched in two of the three games, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks, striking out five as Princeton won both games on the way to a series sweep.
When Harrington saw the Big Green again on Wednesday to open the Ivy League Tournament on the same Strubing Field in Princeton, Harrington outdid even that, dealing a three-hit, no-walk shutout with three Ks as the junior righthander outdueled newly named Ivy League Pitcher of the Year Jensin Hall in a 4-0 win.
Princeton will take on fellow winner Harvard in a 10 a.m. game back at Strubing Field with Dartmouth and Yale to follow at approximately 12:30 p.m. to stay in the tournament.
Hall, whom the Tigers did not see during that regular-season series, allowed four runs on six hits and five walks, striking out four. Princeton struck first in a second inning that saw singles for Sophia Marsalo and Grace Jackson before a walk to Sonia Zhang to load the bases. Lauren Sablone and Julia Dumais then followed with back-to-back walks, forcing in two runs to give Princeton a 2-0 lead.
Three innings later, Karis Ford took an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field, bringing home a leadoff hit-by-pitch for Dumais to push the lead to 4-0. It was just the fifth home run Hall allowed in now 104 2/3 innings on the season.
That was more than enough for Harrington and the Tiger defense as Princeton combined to be nearly spotless against the Big Green. Two of the three hits came back-to-back with two outs in the first inning from Kelly Beaupre and Olivia Schramm, but a strikeout ended that threat. Starting with that K, Harrington set down 19 of the last 20 Big Green batters with only a fourth-inning two-out single from Leila Hennessy providing a Dartmouth baserunner over the last 6 1/3 frames. An error-free day in the field saw Princeton retire seven Dartmouth batters with flyouts and 11 on the ground in what was Harrington's first career seven-inning shutout.
