Schulze Scores All Three As Princeton Rallies Past Rutgers 3-2
September 22, 2024 | Field Hockey
The elapsed time between Grace Schulze's last goal for the Princeton field hockey team and the one she scored two minutes into Sunday's game at Rutgers was 681 days. The elapsed time between her second and third was less than a minute.
Make that 37 seconds, to be exact.
Schulze scored all three goals — the final two with 4:31 and 3:54 to play — to rally Princeton to a 3-2 win over Rutgers Sunday. Beth Yeager assisted on the first and third of Schulze's goals.
The victory improved the Tigers to 4-2 on the season and came two days after a 3-0 win over Penn in the team's Ivy League opener. It also came seven days after Princeton lost 3-2 at Penn State after leading 2-1 in the fourth quarter.
This time, it was Princeton who reversed the same deficit for the same final score.
Schulze was an All-Ivy selection in 2022 before she missed almost the entire 2023 season due to an injury in the first minute of the second game. She hadn't scored in the first five games, but she broke out in a major way against Rutgers.
Her first goal came off a penalty corner two minutes into the game, when Yeager, instead of shooting, passed it to Schulze, the inserter. After Rutgers scored once in the first quarter and once in the second, and the 2-1 lead stood up through the third and well into the fourth — kept there by two huge saves from Robyn Thompson in the Princeton goal.
Then, with less than five minutes to play, Schulze took a loose ball, dribbled down the left side, turned the corner into the circle and lofted the ball into the top corner of the cage. Princeton then drew another corner, and Schulze and Yeager replayed the first goal.
Princeton outshot Rutgers 15-13 and had nine penalty corners to seven for RU. Thompson made four saves, the last two the biggest.
Princeton plays at Columbia Friday at 6 and then hosts No. 1 Northwestern Sunday at noon.

Did we say it was tied? That's three for Grace Schulze.
