PRINCETON, N.J. – Coming off a successful road trip to Ithaca on Saturday, the #9 Princeton men's soccer team will continue its travels as it heads to Virginia to face JMU on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Sentara Park.
Last Time Out
Princeton most recently downed Ivy rival Cornell, 2-0, on the road in Ithaca on Saturday.
Kristian Kelley and Daniel Ittycheria scored in the contest, with Ittycheria notching his fifth of the season to lead the league in goals. For his performance, Ittycheria was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Andrew Samuels was in goal for the Tigers, making seven saves to earn his fourth-consecutive shutout.
In The Rankings
Princeton currently ranks first in the nation in RPI. The Tigers were ranked no. 9 in the nation in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, marking the highest Princeton has been ranked in program history.
The Tigers sit at third nationally in won-lost-tied percentage.
Difficult to score against, Princeton ranks second in the country in goals allowed. The Tigers are also second in save percentage with 0.923 and second in shutout percentage. They are only behind NC State in all three stats.
Samuels' Saves
Samuels has been in goal for all ten of the Tigers' matchups this season, allowing just one goal in the last eight games and just three on the season.
The junior Burlingame, Calif. native ranks third nationally and first in the Ivy League in goals-against average with 0.30.
Samuels also ranks third in the country in save percentage, tallying an impressive 0.921.
With six shutouts, Samuels ranks eighth in the country.
For his dominant first half of the season, Samuels was named to the MAC Hermann Midseason Watch List on Friday. Joining him on the list is senior defender Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch.
Offensive Leaders
Ittycheria leads the Ivy League with five goals on the season, scoring three game-winners on the way.
Senior defender Jack Jasinski and junior forward Bardia Hormozi each have three goals and three assists to their credit for nine points.
First-year Jackson Martin also has three goals, while junior Kevin Kelley and sophomore Kristian Kelley each have two.
Hungry Tigers
The defending Ivy League Tournament Champions return to Roberts this year after a successful 2024 season that saw the Tigers go 12-7 and make an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Princeton was picked to finish second in the Ivy League preseason poll, receiving five first-place votes.
The Tigers return 24 players this season, accounting for 70% (21 of 30) goals and 85% of assists (24 of 28). Of the 24 returners, 11 are seniors.
Keeping an Eye Out
Key returning seniors Ittycheria, Whitchurch and Jasinski were named United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch in their respective positions this preseason.
Whitchurch was named to the preseason MAC Hermann Watch List, again appearing on the Midseason List announced last Friday. The centerback was one of just four defenders and 31 players to be selected nationally to the Midseason Watch List.
His leadership on the back line helped Princeton to a goals-against average of 1.16 in 2024, and he was named to the First Team All-Ivy and the Ivy League All-Tournament Team.
Jasinski led the Tigers in assists with nine last season, putting him third in the Princeton record book for assists in a single season. With three already this season, he now holds fourth in career assists with 19.
Jasinski and Ittycheria were both named to the 2024 Second Team All-Ivy.
Called Up
Ittycheria was drafted by D.C. United in the 2025 MLS Superdraft. He was selected in the second round as the 40th overall pick after leading the Tigers in goals in both 2024 and 2023.
In 2024, Ittycheria logged nine goals and one assist. Three of those goals came during the Ivy League Tournament, for which he was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
This preseason, Ittycheria was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Second Team.
Captains
Whitchurch and Jack Hunt were named captains to lead the 2025 squad. Hunt, a midfielder from Coronado, Calif., was a 2024 All-Ivy Honorable Mention. Both captains hail from California, with Whitchurch coming from San Diego.
About the Newcomers
Princeton welcomes seven talented newcomers in the class of 2029 this season in Tyler Vilet, Ben Manfroy, Frederik Sadjak, Jackson Martin, Tyler Austin, Ryker Joutz and Giacomo Gabrielli.
Martin has three goals on the season already, while Sadjak has one start.
About Coach Barlow
Head coach Jim Barlow is in his 29th season as the men's soccer head coach and has accumulated 231 career wins with the Tigers, the most for any soccer coach in Princeton history, men's or women's. Barlow was also named the 2021 Ivy League Coach of the Year.
Scouting JMU
JMU is 1-7-2 on the season, most recently drawing Georgia State 1-1 on Friday. Its one win on the season was a 2-0 victory over Iona on September 23. The Dukes are 0-3-1 in the Sun Belt.
Diego Ossa has two goals on the season for a squad high. Manuel Lolas matches him with four points from a goal and two assists.
Erik Jaspers has been in goal for a majority of the Dukes' contests this season, making 24 saves for a GAA of 1.00. Josha Moya was in goal for three games, making 12 saves with a GAA of 2.11.
Princeton and JMU have only met twice before, last meeting in the NCAA tournament in 1995 and meeting once in 1974 before that. Both contests were JMU victories.
