March 15, 2025 | Women's Track and Field
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – Mena Scatchard took second place in the women's mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. on Saturday.
Running a time of 4:32.87, Scatchard's runner-up finish is the highest ever at the NCAA Indoor Championships by a Princeton track and field athlete, surpassing a third place finish from Cack Ferrell in the 3000 in 2005.
With the second-place run, Scatchard earns first-team All-American honors to become the 11th NCAA Indoor All-American in Princeton women's track and field history.
Competing in her first NCAA Indoor Championships, Scatchard was patient in the final as she lurked in the back of the pack for most of the race as a pair of Oregon runners set the pace throughout.
Sitting in 10th place as the bell signaled the final lap, Scatchard made her move and passed runner after runner. As the finish line drew near, she passed one final opponent and stretched past Northern Arizona's Maggi Condon to beat her for second by .01 seconds. Oregon's Wilma Nielson was first in 4:32.40.
The Ivy champion in the mile this season, Scatchard adds NCAA runner-up status to an already impressive resume that includes the Princeton indoor record in the mile as well as three other events – the 3000 as an individual and the 4x800 relay and DMR.
