LEONIA, N.J. – The No. 5 Princeton heavyweight rowing team retained the Childs Cup for the 13th consecutive season over the No. 10 University of Pennsylvania and No. 16 Columbia at Overpeck Park Saturday morning.
"I was very proud of the way that our whole team raced today," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "The competition on all levels was fierce and the weather served up a bit of nastiness. We came away with some good lessons of goals for this next week of training and we're excited to get back to work on Monday."
The Childs Cup, the oldest trophy in collegiate sport, is presented by George M. Childs and rowed for annually by the Tigers, Quakers and Lions. Princeton now leads the all-time series, which began in 1879, with 54 victories to Penn's 44 and Columbia's 12.
The Tigers' 1V (6:11.2) secured the Childs Cup by finishing ahead of the Quakers (6:11.2) and Lions (6:32.5).
Princeton's 2V (6:24.4) was a close second to Penn (6:23.1) and finished ahead of Columbia (6:55.3) while the 3V (6:23.0) crossed the finish line before the Quakers (6:30.7). The Tigers' 4V (6:23.0) also earned the victory over Penn (6:30.7), and the 5V (6:48.0) fell just short of the Quakers (6:45.6).
