Softball Team Sweeps Rider Heading Into Ivy Regular-Season Finale
April 29, 2025 | Softball
With 2-0 and 6-1 wins over Rider on Tuesday evening, the Princeton softball team made sure its last regular-season games of the spring of 2025 at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field were wins. Now, the Tigers get to get some more games this spring at their new home.
At 24-15 overall and 15-3 in the Ivy, Princeton holds a three-game lead over Brown, Columbia and Harvard in the Ivy standings heading into the final three-game series of the Ivy season this weekend at Brown. Just one win in the three-game series will lock up Ivy League Tournament hosting duties for the Tigers beginning next Thursday, May 8 for the four-team, double-elimination event that will decide the Ivy League's automatic bid recipient for the NCAA tournament.
Tuesday's first game saw Princeton and Rider duel for five scoreless innings before Princeton broke through with two runs in the sixth. Those first five innings saw Princeton starter Meghan Harrington set down the first nine batters she faced before allowing a walk and a double in the fourth and giving way to Brielle Wright for the final out of the inning. Wright finished the game, allowing just two hits and a walk while each Tiger pitcher struck out three batters.
Princeton had runners on in three of the first five innings and got one as far as second base after a one-out hit batter and a base hit in the first inning. Other than that over the first five innings, Rider pitcher Anna-Marie Groskritz allowed just two walks. The sixth-inning rally started with a one-out double from pinch hitter Sophia Marsalo before Braeden Hale drove home Marsalo with a base hit. Three batters later, a two-out base hit from Lauren Pappert drove home Hale to make it 2-0.
Wright took care of the Broncs in the seventh to seal the win, facing four batters in the seventh and allowing just a two-out base hit.
Princeton got going on offense right away in the second game, using four hits and an Allie Goodwin sacrifice fly to score three runs and answer a Rider first-inning run that came across on a walk, a throwing error and a base hit. Julia Dumais, Hale and Karis Ford started the bottom of the first with hits, and two batters after Goodwin's sac fly, Graciela Dominguez had a two-run hit to make it 3-1 Princeton.
The second inning saw Hornberger start with a hit-by-pitch that proved costly when Dumais homered to right field to make it 5-1 Princeton. In the fifth, a two-out rally saw pinch hitter Jessica Phelps drop in a base hit, Dominguez draw a walk and Marsalo get an RBI single to make it 6-1.Â
In the circle, Cassidy Shaw threw the first five innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk, tying her career high with nine Ks. Keala Hollenkamp closed it out with two spotless innings, striking out the side in the seventh.
