April 05, 2025 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 4 Princeton University heavyweight rowing team swept all five races against No. 15 Navy at Lake Carnegie Saturday morning to retain the Princeton-Navy Cup.
"I am proud of the way that all of our crews raced today," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "It was a solid step forward for the squad on all levels and it was great to see the progress we were able to make over the past week. We are eager get back to work again on Monday in preparation for the Childs Cup and our first round of Ivy racing this coming Saturday."
At the conclusion of racing, a pair of boats were dedicated. The first was the 1952, dedicated to Edgar Masinter '52 to recognize the 1952 varsity which competed in the US Olympic Trials. In addition, Masinter was presented with Prentke Award, which is awarded to an individual for outstanding achievement on behalf of Princeton Rowing. The second dedication was the program's newest pair to Nick Mead '17, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and carried the flag for Team USA at the Closing Ceremony.
"Today's boat dedication for the 1952 was an incredibly special and moving moment for our entire team," said Hughes. "Even through the crew of 1952 was racing 73 years ago, it was amazing to hear Ed Masinter '52 share about his crew's most valued memories during their time rowing for Princeton and to hear how much their experience mirrors the experience our rowers are having today. While the technology in our boats may evolve and change over time, the lessons and the values learned through rowing are timeless."
The 1V came away with the win for the second week in a row as it crossed the finish line in 5:37.2, ahead of the Midshipmen who finished in 5:52.3. The 2V (5:41.5) also came out on top, finishing in front of Navy (6:01.0). The 3V's time of 5:47.9 saw it finish ahead of the Midshipmen, who posted a time of 5:53.6, while the 4V finished with a time of 5:58.2 to Navy's 6:01.9.
