
Women's Volleyball Drops Road Contest At Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened the Towson/Coppin State Invitational with a hard-fought battle against Towson inside SECU Arena, falling 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23).
Valerie Nutakor led the Tigers with a double-double, tallying 15 kills and a team and career-high 21 digs. Lucia Scalamandre added 11 kills on a .320 hitting percentage along with four blocks, while Erin McNair and Taylor Clarke each had 10 kills and five digs. Sydney Draper handed out a match-high 43 assists and compiled 16 digs for her third double-double of the season. In addition, Shelby Burriss finished with a match-high six blocks.
Towson jumped out to an 11-9 advantage in the first set, but a kill by McNair ignited a 5-0 run that put Princeton in front, 14-11. Towson would soon use a 4-0 run to take the lead at 16-15, and while a Scalamandre kill would tie it up 20-20, the Tigers would fall just short in the first set, 25-23.
After gaining a 9-8 edge over Towson, Princeton used a 5-0 run to take a five-point lead, 14-8. A pair of errors by Towson saw the Tigers increase their advantage to seven at 22-7, before a Clarke kill gave Princeton set point at 24-19. Scalamandre put down a kill to secure a second set victory, 25-19, and level the match at 1-1.
The Tigers fell into a 4-1 hole early but battled back to tie the score at 12-12 after a kill then a block by Scalamandre. Princeton kept it close throughout, with a Scalamandre kill making it 23-21, however it was Towson who would go on take the 2-1 advantage in the match with a 25-21 triumph in the third set.
The fourth set saw Towson surge its way to a 20-13 lead, until a kill by McNair led a 9-1 run that gave Princeton the lead, 22-21. The Tigers were unable to hold on to their lead, and it was Towson who would go on to prevail in the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
