vs. Yale, Saturday, 7 p.m. | ESPN+ | Int'l Video | Live Stats | Team Yearbook | Free Admission | Unified Soccer Night
The Ivy: The Tigers are in a logjam in the race for Ivy League Tournament spots as one of four teams at 1-1. Columbia leads the way with six points at 2-0, Dartmouth is next with four points at 1-0-1, and the Tigers join Brown, Cornell and Harvard at 1-1, each with three points. Penn stands next at 0-1-1 with one point, and Yale is looking for its first points after an 0-2 start. The top four teams will make the Ivy tournament with the top seed hosting.Â
On Princeton: The Tigers (2-4-3) are looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss at Harvard last Saturday in just the second time all season that Princeton was shut out. Zoe Markesini, who has been out due to injury since the Aug. 31 game against Syracuse, leads the team with two goals. Alexandra Barry, Nina Cantor, Ally Murphy, Pia Beaulieu and Sarah Houston have scored a goal apiece, and while Cerone (1-2-2, 1.60 GAA, .621 sv%) has played 618 minutes in goal, Sydney Romano (1-2-1, 1.41 GAA, .769 sv%) has played 191 minutes.Â
On Yale: The Bulldogs (2-7) will be looking to snap a seven-game skid since opening the season with back-to-back wins over Vermont and Hofstra. Vienna Lundstedt leads the team with five of the Bulldogs' 13 goals and Anita Thorvaldsdottir scoring three. Kyla Holmes has played all 810 minutes in goal, holding a 2.33 GAA and a .731 save percentage.
The series: Princeton leads the all-time series with Yale 28-15-3 since the first meeting in 1980. Under Sean Driscoll, Princeton is 5-3-1 against Yale, and the teams have alternated wins and losses since Princeton won back-to-back meetings in 2017 and 2018, with Yale winning in 2019, Princeton in 2021, Yale in 2022, Princeton in 2023 and Yale in 2024. Princeton had a 3-0 start to the Ivy League season last year, with wins over Cornell, Brown and Penn all by shutout, before heading to Yale for a 2-1 loss on Oct. 13, 2024. Alanna Butcher, now graduated, had both goals for Yale while Kayla Wong had Princeton's goal. No current Bulldogs have scored against Princeton, while Drew Coomans had a goal in Princeton's 3-1 home win in 2023 to join Wong as the only active Tigers to have scored against Yale. No current Tigers have played in goal against Yale, but the Bulldogs have back their goalies from each of the last two meetings, with Anna Shamgochian getting two saves in last year's win and Kyla Holmes making eight saves in the 2023 loss at Princeton.Â
Outshoot 'em: In 173 games under Sean Driscoll, Princeton has outshot its opponent in overall shots 132 times and has equaled its opponent in total shots three times, getting outshot 38 times, or in just more than once every five games (22 percent).Â
Preseason polls: Princeton was picked first and Yale fifth in the Ivy preseason poll. The Tigers had eight athletic All-Ivy honorees last year but took a huge hit with losses to graduation and the pros. Pietra Tordin, who chose to forgo her senior season to turn pro with the NWSL's Portland Thorns, was the Ivy Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, and Lily Bryant, Heather MacNab and Tyler McCamey all graduated and went on to the pro ranks, with Bryant at FC Porto in Portugal, MacNab with the NWSL's North Carolina Courage, and McCamey with the NWSL's KC Current. On the second team, Ryann Brown is using a graduate season at North Carolina and Kate Toomey graduated, leaving Zoe Markesini and Drew Coomans as the only returning 2024 All-Ivy honorees for the Tigers. Markesini has missed time since leaving the Aug. 31 game against Syracuse due to injury. For the Bulldogs, of the team's four 2024 athletic All-Ivy honorees, only backliner Logan Jacobs, a second-team honoree last year, is back.Â
Tigers in the NWSL: Princeton has six players currently on NWSL rosters. Pietra Tordin, who turned pro following her junior season last school year, has already twice been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month, doing so in June and adding the second in August. Through the weekend, Tordin had played in 21 games for the Portland Thorns, three in September and seven on the season overall, scoring four goals. Tyler Lussi '17 started the North Carolina Courage's last 11 games through last weekend, scoring both of her season's goals in that span. Aria Nagai '24 logged 36 minutes in last weekend's game against Bay FC and has played in six of the last eight games, and Madison Curry '24 started her 14th straight game and 19th on the season last weekend for the Seattle Reign against the North Carolina Courage. Heather MacNab '25 made her pro debut for the North Carolina Courage on Sept. 13 against Angel City FC, and Tyler McCamey '25 was signed to the KC Current on Sept. 5. Along with the NWSL six, Lily Bryant '25 is playing in Portugal for FC Porto, making her pro debut on Sept. 13.
The staff: Head coach Sean Driscoll is in his 11th year with Princeton and 10th competitive season (team did not compete in 2020), and has the most Ivy League Coach/Coaching Staff of the Year honors since the award began in 2014, with four (2015, 2017, 2018, 2024). He's Princeton's second-winningest coach, with 109 wins (Julie Shackford, 203 wins, 1995-2014), and with his 40 wins at Manhattan (2005-09) added in, he's just one win from his 150th career victory as a college head coach. Associate Head Coach Mike Poller has been with Driscoll for the entire Tiger tenure, and assistant coach Chris Duggan is in his fourth season with the program. Under Driscoll, Princeton has won four Ivy League titles (2015, 2017, 2018, 2024) and has made six NCAA tournaments (2015, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023, 2024), making the second round in 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2023 and the quarterfinals in 2017.Â
