WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) - Gerry Crosby scored a career-high 24 points and sparked two key runs as Monmouth defeated Princeton 70-59 Saturday night.
It was only the second win for Monmouth (1-1) in seven meetings with Princeton (0-2).
Princeton played its first game since discovering forward Chris Krug is taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. Forward Nate Walton was out with a sprained ankle.
In the first half, Princeton led 19-18 with four minutes remaining before Crosby hit two straight three-pointers to spark an 8-1 run that gave Monmouth a 26-20 halftime lead. Crosby's first three-pointer provided the seventh and final lead change of the game.
In the second half, with Monmouth leading 28-23, Crosby scored 14 points in a 26-13 run as the Hawks gradually opened a 54-36 lead with 5:16 remaining.
Rahsaan Johnson, Monmouth's leading scorer, did not start the game due to discipline reasons. He had 15 points and four assists, while Jason Krayl had 13 points, six assists and six rebounds, and Kevin Owens had 13 points. Princeton got 19 points from C.J. Chapman and 14 from Mike Bechtold.
NOTES -- Princeton was 15 for 33 from three-point range and 5 for 11 from two-point range ... Freshman Konrad Wysocki had five points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes at center ... Senior Terence Rozier-Byrd made his first career start at center ... Princeton has used two different starting centers in two games (Nate Walton, Terence Rozier-Byrd) after using two different starting centers in the previous 172 games (Steve Goodrich, Chris Young) ... Princeton played a key stretch of the first half with three freshmen (Wysocki, Ed Persia, Andre Logan) and two sophomores (Kyle Wente, Pete Hegseth) on the court ... Princeton was also without Ahmed El-Nokali, still sidelined from surgery to repair a tendon in his groin ... Logan was 2 for 2 from three-point range ... Bechtold is 6 for 10 from three-point range in two games ... Princeton is off until Friday, when it plays Weber State in the First Merchants Bank Classic at Ball State in Muncie, Ind., tip-off vs. Weber State is 5 p.m., not 6 p.m. as originally noted
