Easton, Pa. - Lafayette College shot 24 for 25 from the foul line and made its final 16 straight to hold off Princeton 80-73 in a men's basketball game at the Kirby Sports Center Wednesday night.
The loss snapped Princeton's two-game winning streak and dropped the Tigers to 2-3 as they head into their home opener Saturday night (7:30) against Xavier. Lafayette, who defeated Princeton for the third straight season, improved to 4-3.
Lafayette's Brian Burke snapped a 33-33 tie with a three-pointer at the first half buzzer, and the Leopards would not trail in the second half. Princeton would tie the game twice, but Lafayette regained the lead in the final four minutes and then was picture perfect from the foul line from there. Burke, a 97% foul shooter, led the way with 7 for 7 foul shooting, followed by Tim Bieg (6 for 6).
Mike Bechtold scored a career-high 23 points and tied his career high with seven rebounds for Princeton, while Nate Walton came close to the first triple-double in school history with 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
Princeton shot 14 for 34 from three-point range, including a 4 for 4 night from freshman Ed Persia and a 4 for 10 night from C.J. Chapman.
