Princeton NJ - In one of the nation's largest and most prestigous fall rowing regattas, Princeton successfully defended its home course winning two of the seven events while placing second in three others.
Two Tiger crews scored Princeton Chase victories. The Tigers' "A" crew won the women's eight event, defeating second place Yale "A" by over 20 seconds. The "A" crew has been virtually unchallenged by collegiate crews this fall, although it has not competed against some fast West Coast crews such as Washington and California.
The men's lightweight four, in the last event of the day, notched the Tigers' first win over a top Yale crew in two years when it defeated the third-place Elis by seven seconds. Harvard finished in between the two crews, four seconds behind Princeton.
The men's heavyweight eight "A" was the highest American finisher, as they placed second to University of Technology, Sydney - a crew visiting for the week from Australia.
Another second place Tiger crew was the men's lightweight eight, which closed the gap on Yale from over 30 seconds at the Head of the Charles to ten seconds on Sunday. The Tigers also turned the tables on Navy, defeating the Midshipmen by two seconds after finishing ten seconds back at the Charles. The Tigers' final second place finish was in the men's heavyweight four. A surprising Temple crew nipped Princeton by under one second for the title. Princeton also placed third, ten seconds off the pace.
NOTES: In perhaps the strongest performance of the day, the men's lightweight eight "C" defeated the "A" boats from Columbia, Rutgers, Dartmouth, and Georgetown in racing to an 11th place finish in the lightweight eights... The heavyweight men have now narrowly defeated Cornell twice this fall, by 2.5 seconds at the Chase and by five seconds at the Head of the Charles last weekend... Princeton captured three of the top five spots in the heavyweight four, and two of the top three spots in the heavyweight eight (American crews) ... In the women's open eight race, the top three lightweight crews - Radcliffe, Princeton, and Villanova - all finished within 3.5 seconds of each other, finishing 14th, 15th, and 16th... Some notable Eastern crews not in attendance were the men's heavyweights from Harvard, Brown, Northeastern, and Yale.
