Princeton, N.J. - Two straight games against the second-ranked team in the ECAC was just too much for the Princeton women's hockey team. Fourteen tired Tigers fought the visiting St. Lawrence Saints for two strong periods Saturday night after a close 2-1 loss the night before, but the Saints used three third-period goals to roll to a 4-1 victory.
After an unassisted breakaway goal by St. Lawrence (4-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 ECAC) freshman forward Christian Powers (Canton, N.Y.) at 8:56 of the first period, the Tigers tied it nearly seven minutes later when sophomore forward Nikola Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) knocked in a rebound from senior defenseman Aviva Grumet-Morris (Evanston, Ill.) on a 5-on-3 power play. Princeton (1-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 ECAC) failed on a similar two-man advantage late in last night's one-goal game. The second period passed without scoring before fatigue became a factor for Princeton in the third period. St. Lawrence freshman Rebecca Russell (Clarenville, Newfoundland) scored at 2:31 of the final period, giving her team a 2-1 lead. After Princeton freshman defenseman Katharine Maglione (Fayetteville, N.Y.) went to the penalty box for body-checking at 8:35, Saints sophomore forward Ricki-Lee Doyle (Calgary, Alberta) punched in a power-play goal to make it 3-1 St. Lawrence. Saints senior defenseman Colleen Coakley (Canton, N.Y.) threw more salt on the wound, scoring at 11:33 and vaulting her team to a 4-1 lead.
"St. Lawrence is a good team," said Princeton women's hockey head coach Jeff Kampersal. "They're well-coached. We played with a lot of heart, a lot of passion, but our brand of hockey sometimes just fades in and out."
St. Lawrence sophomore goalie Rachel Barrie (Armprior, Ont.) made 23 saves on 24 shots. Princeton sophomore goalie Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, Minn.) made 34 saves on 38 shots.
St. Lawrence returns home to face Vermont next on Friday and Saturday. Princeton heads to the road to take on Providence Friday before a match Nov. 18 in New Haven against Yale.
