Almost all of the alums were there for the party. For one, at least, it was strictly a work night.
While nearly 100 former Princeton basketball players gathered at Jadwin Gym to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the program, John Thompson stayed focus on the business at hand.
When it was over, everyone was happy.
Thompson saw his Princeton team roll past Dartmouth 68-52 in front of 6,130 at Jadwin who saw the Tigers remain tied with Pennsylvania in first place in a crowded Ivy League race.
Princeton and Penn are even at 8-3, while Yale and Brown each won to remain a game behind at 7-4. Princeton and Penn are at Yale and Brown next weekend, and then Princeton hosts Penn March 6 and Brown hosts Yale March 7. The other four Ivy teams are mathematically eliminated from title contention. The night at Princeton began with a reception and dinner honoring the basketball alums, and there was a ceremony at halftime that included Hall of Famers Pete Carril and Bill Bradley, as well as Geoff Petrie, Butch van Breda Kolff and a semi-circle of former players.
As for the game, Princeton trailed only once, at 3-2, built an 11-point halftime lead and led by as many as 23 in the second half.
Nate Walton had 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in a big effort for the Tigers, who won their 48th straight home game against league teams other than Penn. Mike Bechtold continues to improve from his foot injury, and he added 13 points in 14 minutes.
Princeton shot 21 for 41 from the field in the game and outrebounded Dartmouth 30-21. Dartmouth had defeated Princeton 57-56 two weeks ago in Hanover.
