Aug. 29, 2001
The Princeton men's basketball team will play 12 home games, including three against teams that made the 2001 NCAA touament, and in tournaments at California and in Washington, D.C. in one of the tougher schedules in recent Tiger history, head coach John Thompson announced today.
Princeton's schedule features two teams in the preseason Top 10 in Maryland and Kansas and could feature five preseason Top 25 teams.
Princeton, which won its eighth Ivy title in the last 13 years in Thompson's first season as head coach a year ago, opens the 2001-02 season at the Black Coaches' Association Classic at California, where it faces the host school on Nov. 15. The other two teams in the tournament are St. Joseph's, a Sweet 16 team a year ago, and Eastern Washington.
Princeton is also in the BB&T Classic at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., where it will take on 2001 Final Four-participant Maryland and then either Connecticut or George Washington in early December. Princeton has 12 home games, including three against teams from last year's NCAA tournament. The highlight is Dec. 12, when powerhouse Kansas comes to Jadwin Gym in a return game from Princeton's trip to Allen Fieldhouse in the 1999-2000 season. Holy Cross and Monmouth, who also visit Jadwin as seven of Princeton's 13 possible Division I non-league opponents were in last year's NCAA tournament.
The Ivy League season begins Jan. 11 at Harvard. The Tigers face Pennsylvania Feb. 12 at home and March 5 in Philadelphia.
