COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Princeton, No. 5 in the STX/NFHCA poll of Sept. 25, tasted defeat for the first time this season after falling to No. 1 Maryland 3-1 tonight in College Park, Md. The last meeting between these two teams was in the second round of last year's NCAA tournament, where the Terrapins came away with a 3-1 victory. The Tigers drop to 5-1, including a 2-0 mark in the Ivy League. Maryland moves to 8-1 on the year with the win
"We knew going into the game that it was going to be a tough transition to that level after the schedule we have so far this year," said head coach Beth Bozman. "I think that we made a couple of key mistakes that were costly, but that will just make us more prepared for Sunday's game."
Junior Carissa Mossimer opened the scoring for he Terrapins off of an assist from freshman Colleen Barbieri. Maryland took a 2-0 lead into the intermission after senior Megan Kelly received a pass from classmate Rachel Hiskins at the stroke mark and was able to find the back of the cage.
Barbieri was able to give the Terrapins a 3-0 lead at 52:59 when she collected a pass from Hiskins and shot it into the left side of the cage. Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) provided Princeton's lone goal of the night with her backhand sweep at the 60:20 mark to provide the final 3-1 margin.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass) had an outstanding game in goal for the Tigers, finishing with 13 saves. Senior Ashley Hohnstine played the first 52:59 in goal for Maryland, making three saves Freshman Kerry Hearsey came on to finish the game and finished with one save and allowed one goal.
Princeton will return home to face defending national champion Old Dominion, ranked No. 3, on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
