Let's Make it 4-0 Over the Crimson
January 11, 2002 | Women's Ice Hockey
Princeton (10-5-2, 6-2-0) opened the scoring just 3:25 into the contest when Lisa Rasmussen (Washington, DC) gained control of a loose puck and flipped it into an open net, putting the Tigers up 1-0 . A Crimson powerplay goal by Lauren McAuliffe (North Reading, MA) tied the score at one as the teams broke for the first intermission.
Princeton opened the second period just as it had the first, with a goal at the 4:08 mark. This time it was Melissa Deland (Washington, DC) who placed a wrist shot past Harvard goalie Alison Kuusisto (Duluth, MN). Princeton would score again less then three minutes later when Gretchen Anderson's (Natick, MA) shot found the left post. Nikola Holmes (Apple Valley, MN) was there to convert the rebound and the Tigers found themselves up 3-1 on the favored Crimson. Harvard (8-7-1, 3-2-1) cut the lead to 3-2 later in the period on another powerplay as Tracy Catlin (Cambridge, MA) hit the back of the net. The tying goal came 1:20 into the third. Nicole Corriero (Thornhill, ONT) notched her 19th goal of the season.
Harvard controlled the action for the rest of regulation, outshooting the Tigers 10-1, but were unable to beat Megan Van Beusekom, who finished the game with 20 saves. In overtime, it was Fedderly's turn to pick up a loose puck in front of the net and beat Kuusisto's between the pads for the game-winner. The goal was Fedderly's first of the season.
"Heading into the overtime, I told them to just throw whatever they could at the net," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "(Harvard) had all of the momentum and we were just trying to hang on. In the overtime we got lucky."
Despite the win, the Tigers may have suffered a loss of star defensman Aviva Grummet-Morris. The senior went down with a knee injury midway through the first period, and saw only two more shifts on the afternoon. She is doubtful for Saturday's game against Brown.
With the win, Princeton improves to 10-5-2, 6-2 in the ECAC. The Tigers have gone 9-2 over the past 11 games. Harvard drops to 8-7-1, 3-2-1 in the ECAC .
