PRINCETON, N.J. - Herve Lamizana scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebound to lead the Rutgers men's basketball team to its fourth consecutive victory over Princeton Saturday night in front of 5,117 fans at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers, who were led by junior Spencer Gloger's 26 points, could not overcome a poor shooting night in a 76-70 loss.
Three Rutgers players ended up in double figures, as Jerome Coleman played through an illness to score 17 points and Ricky Shield contributed 14 points. As a team, the Scarlet Knights shot 51% from the field (26 for 51) and had a 24-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Princeton was able to trim the Rutgers lead to three points with 6:41 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer by Spencer Gloger. It would be the final time Princeton would get within one possession, as Coleman followed with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. Mike Sherrod followed with a steal and a fast-break dunk, opening the lead back to seven points. Princeton, which only made two three-pointers in the whole first half, would make four three-pointers in the final two minutes, but could never get to within three points. The second of the four makes, scored by Judson Wallace with 1:06 remaining, cut the score to 64-60 with 1:06 remaining in the game. Coleman followed with four consecutive free throws, opening the lead back to eight points.
"I thought this was a game of runs," Rutgers head coach Gary Waters said, "and I thought we had more runs than they did."
Rutgers' key run came early in the first half, getting the lead to nine points on several occasions. Princeton made three field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
"That's a terrific defensive team that we played," Princeton head coach John Thompson said afterwards. "They have something to do with the way your offense plays. This team this year can find other ways to score, but we have shot well and we will continue to shoot well."
Judson Wallace contributed a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Will Venable followed a career performance against Lafayette with 14 points. He was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. Kyle Wente led Princeton with six assists and made only one turnover.
Princeton will play its first game at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton this Wednesday against Rider.
