PRINCETON, N.J. - When the puck dropped, Princeton forward Gretchen Anderson (So., Natick, Mass.) was still in the mood for shooting practice. Anderson added another page to her resume Friday night, greeting the Catamounts with four goals and an assist in the Tigers' 7-0 victory at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton (15-6-3 overall, 10-3-0 ECAC-N), ranked tenth in both the USCHO.com and USA Today polls, took control early and never looked back, holding the puck in the Vermont (1-27-1, 0-15-0) zone most of the night. Anderson netted her first at 7:43 of the first period, assisted by forward Lisa Rasmussen (So., Washington, DC) and defender Katharine Maglione (Fr., Fayetteville, NY). Her next came at 9:45 on a breakaway, assisted by Rasmussen and defender Angela Gooldy (So., New Hartford, NY). It was the same story in the second period. Anderson converted another breakaway opportunity to complete the hat trick at 5:48 after passes from forward April Brown (Fr., Savage, Minn.) and Rasmussen. Her fourth and most bizarre goal came at 13:43 of the second. Anderson took the puck behind the goal line and threaded a pass across the crease that hit the skate of Catamount goalie Kami Cote (Fr., Copperton, Utah) and trickled into the net, indicative of Vermont's troubles. Though she was finished beating Cote, Anderson was not ready to step back from the scoring spotlight just yet, assisting on forward Susan Hobson's (So., Mississauga, Ont.) goal at 18:30. Co-captain Aviva Grumet-Morris (Sr., Evanston, Ill.) also collected an assist on the play. Princeton led 5-0 after two periods.
Anderson passed the duties to her teammates in the third period. Gooldy scored just 23 seconds after the puck dropped on assists from Brown and forward Briana Bennett (Fr., Warwick, RI). Vermont kept the Tigers from inflicting further damage until the final minute when Maglione slapped one past Cote after passes from Grumet-Morris and forward Eliza Golden (Fr., New Caanan, Conn.).
Princeton goaltender Sarah Ahlquist (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) had a few scares, but needed only ten saves for the shutout. The less-fortunate Cote was flooded with 49 shots, making 42 saves. The Tigers outshot the Catamounts 49-10 for the game, including 18-1 in the first period and 21-5 in the second.
Princeton hosts Dartmouth tomorrow at 4:00PM at Baker Rink. The fifth-ranked Big Green (19-4-2, 11-2-0) lead the ECAC North with 22 points. The Tigers can claim a tie for the division lead with a win and would then hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with just two conference games remaining.
