PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal spoke briefly about each of his four senior skaters before Saturday night's crucial contest with Dartmouth at Hobey Baker Rink, but after each player received a bouquet of flowers, the visitors stole the spotlight. Forwards Carly Haggard (Jr., Port Alberni, B.C.) and Cheryl Muranko (Fr., Cambridge, Ont.) each scored twice as the Big Green rolled to a 5-1 win.
Muranko netted her first at 4:35 of the first period, beating Princeton goalie Megan Van Beusekom (So., Loretto, Minn.) after a pass from forward Meagan Walton (Fr., Calgary, Alb.). Before the Tigers could catch their breath, forward Danielle Grundy (Fr., Kelowna, B.C.) made it a two-goal Dartmouth lead just one minute later at 5:33. Princeton forward Susan Hobson (So., Mississauga, Ont.) gave her team a boost, scoring off a rebound at 10:51 of the second, about a minute after the Tigers successfully killed a 5-on-3 Big Green power play, assisted by defender Angela Gooldy (So., New Hartford, NY) and forward April Brown (Fr., Savage, Minn.). A Princeton power play late in the second had the crowd back in it, but Haggard stopped the Tiger momentum with a shorthanded goal at 18:22, assisted by forward Sarah Clark (So., Novi, Mich.).
After Princeton (15-7-3 overall, 10-4-0 ECAC-North) played its best period for 13 minutes, Dartmouth (20-4-2, 12-2-0) broke the dam late in the third when Haggard scored her second at 13:44 off a pass from defender Louise Pietrangelo. Muranko capped the evening with another shorthanded goal, this one at 17:09 after a feed from Walton.
Dartmouth dominated a physical, penalty-ridden game, out-shooting the Tigers 38-14 for the afternoon. Van Beusekom made 33 saves for Princeton. Amy Ferguson (Jr., Pictou, N.S.) stopped 13 shots for the Big Green. Both teams were lackluster on the power play: Princeton went 0-5 and Dartmouth was 0-3.
The win separates the first-place Big Green from the contenders in the ECAC Northern division. Both teams have only two conference games remaining.
