Cambridge, MA - The Princeton women's hockey team suffered a 7-1 loss at Harvard on Saturday night at Bright Hockey Center to close out the regular season. Princeton and Harvard finished in a tie for fourth in the ECAC North standings, but the Tigers won the tiebreaker and will host the Crimson in a best-of-three series on March 8-10.
Mina Pell (Washington, DC) and Kat Sweet (St. Davids, PA) each scored twice to lead the Harvard women's hockey team to a 7-1 victory over Princeton on Saturday afternoon at the Bright Hockey Center.
The Crimson jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kalen Ingram (Peterborough, ONT) converted a pass from Nicole Corriero (Thornhill, ONT) with 1:33 left in the first period for the only goal of the opening stanza. That gave the Crimson momentum heading into next period and Harvard capitalized on that momentum with 1:27 elapsed in the second period. Ali Crum (Aspen, CO) scored and just 25 second later, Sweet notched her first of the game for a 3-0 lead, driving Princeton starting goalie Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, MN) from the game in favor of Sarah Ahlquist (South St. Paul, MN). Alhquist kept Harvard off the board for the rest of the period despite a 13-6 advantage in shots for the Crimson. Pell tallied an unassisted strike at the 2:52 mark of the third period to make the score 4-0 and Lauren McAuliffe (North Reading, MA) scored on a power play as she received the puck from defenseman Ashley Banfield (Toronto, ONT) in the left face off circle and looked to pass. When the defense sagged off her, she let off a quick wrist shot that beat Ahlquist. Pell deflected a shot from Banfield with 4:41 to go in the game to give Harvard a 6-0 advantage but Lisa Rasmussen (Washington, DC) sent Jessica Fedderly (Wyoming, MI) on a successful breakaway to spoil the shutout for Harvard goalie Alison Kuusisto with just 1:01 left in the game. Harvard scored the final goal with five seconds remaining when Sweet tipped Corriero's shot from the point.
Kuusisto made 13 saves for Harvard, which improves to 16-10-2 overall and 9-5-2 in ECAC North. Van Beusekom and Ahlquist combined for 32 saves as Princeton drops to 15-9-3 overall and 10-6-0 in league play.
The two teams tied for fourth in the ECAC North, with Princeton winning the tie-breaker with more league victories. The Crimson and the Tigers will face off in the quarterfinals of the ECAC North Tournament on Friday at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, NJ.
