Men's Basketball Team Departs For Spain, Releases Schedule
August 15, 2002 | Men's Basketball
Aug. 15, 2002
The Princeton men's basketball team departed Thursday for a seven-game, 12-day tour of Spain. The Tigers will play their first game Sunday and their last game August 26, before returning to campus the next day.
Princeton's travel party includes 11 players, led by senior captain Kyle Wente, an honorable mention All-Ivy selection each of the last two years. Wente and fellow senior Ray Robins are Princeton's returning starters from the 2001-02 team, which earned a share of the Ivy League title.
Princeton does return Spencer Gloger, who will be playing with the Tigers for the first time since the 1999-2000 season during the trip to Spain. Gloger, who will be a junior, averaged nearly 13 points per game as a freshman and tied the ivy League record with 10 three-pointers in a game (vs. UAB). The other players on the trip are Andre Logan, Konrad Wysocki, Pete Hegseth, Chris Krug, Ed Persia, Mike Stephens, Judson Wallace and Will Venable.
In addition to the trip to Spain, head coach John Thompson announced Princeton's 2002-03 schedule.
The Tigers open their season Nov. 22-23 at the Sooner invitational, hosted by Oklahoma, a Final Four team a year ago. Princeton will play UC-Irvine in the first round, while Oklahoma and Western Michigan play in the other game. The consolation and championship games are the second night.
The non-league home schedule includes a Nov. 30 home game against Florida International and a Dec. 14 game against Rutgers. Other non-league highlights include a Dec. 22 game at Texas, as well as games at Monmouth, Lafayette and Holy Cross.
Princeton will also play its first game ever at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, where the Tigers will face Rider on Dec. 18.
The Ivy League schedule begins Jan. 31 against Harvard.
The two Princeton-Penn games are scheduled for Feb. 11 in Philadelphia and March 11 in Princeton. Either Princeton or Penn has represented the Ivy League in the NCAA tournament each of the last 14 years.
Princeton went 16-12 and 11-3 in the league last year. The Tigers, one of 17 teams in Division I to have played in the postseason each of the last seven years, lost to Louisville 66-65 in the first round of the NIT.
