Madrid, Spain - The Tigers touched down in Madrid on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. local time. The basketball team will spend the next 12 days touring Spain, competing against eight local teams as well as spending some time touring Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo and several other historic cities.
Much of the team spent the first day of the trip adjusting to the time difference and were free to explore Madrid on their own for the day. At 9:00 p.m., the travel party met in front of the hotel, walked to a small local resturant and dined together.
On Saturday, after touring the ancient town of Toledo located 40 miles outside Madrid, the Tigers spent two hours at practice in the evening.
Princeton will have to adjust to and learn the international rules that govern European basketball.
Princeton's first game is scheduled for Sunday evening in Spain (Sunday afternoon Eastern time). The Tigers have a roster of 11 players as they prepare to chase a 10th Ivy League title in the last 15 years.
"So far it has been an incredible experience," said captain Kyle Wente. "For me, this trip has been the first opportunity that I have had to visit such a place and I happy to be sharing this experience with my team. It is going to take some time to get adjusted to the rules, but we are looking forwarded to the competition here."
Unlike the teams in the States, little scouting has been done for the Spanish opponents.
Wente and Ray Robins are Princeton's two returning starters from last year. Spencer Gloger, who averaged nearly 13 points per game as a freshman in the 1999-2000 season, is back for his first college basketball action since. Andre Logan, returning from a torn ACL, is also on the trip.
