Siguenza, Spain - Spencer Gloger scored 23 points to lead the Tigers as Princeton defeated Rayet Guadalajara 113-102. At the conclusion of the game, Princeton was presented the Siguenza Cup.
Princeton has not scored more than 100 points in a regular season game since the 1970-71 season against Yale.
The Tigers are now 2-0 againt the Spanish competition and will travel to Valencia for their next two contests.
Gloger started quickly, hitting his first two three-pointers and scoring 15 points in the first quarter as Princeton jumped to a 38-26 lead. Rayet Guadalajara, though, rallied in the second quarter to take a 55-53 advatage at halftime.
Kyle Wente, who finished with 19, and Andre Logan gave the Tigers the offense they need in the third, scoring a combined 17 points. Wente hit back-to-back crucial three pointers late in the fourth to put the Tigers up 96-93. Princeton never lost that lead. "The offense played well," said Gloger, who returns to Princeton after taking two seasons off. "We've been working well together and I've been getting the looks that I like."
Princeton played with foul trouble from the opening quarter. Gloger, Judson Wallace and Ed Persia each fouled out and Ray Robins, Kyle Wente and Konrad Wysocki each commited four fouls in the game.
"We are going to go through good streaks and bad streaks over the course of a game," said Wente. "I think that tonight showed that we can work through problems. People stepped up when they needed and we came away with the win."
Logan had 18 points as he continues to work back from a torn ACL, suffered eight months ago at Harvard. Will Venable had 11 for the second straight game, while Pete Hegseth added 13.
"We are very honored to win the Siguenza Cup," said Tiger coach John Thompson. "It's been a fantastic experience so far and a great opportunity to compete against some professional athletes as well as take in a new culture."
Siguenza is a small old twon nestled in a valley of rolling mountains.
Prior to the game, Princeton took a quick trip through town and stopped at the cathedral. The town is also home to a square-shaped castle that sits overlooking the town from a hill. After the game, Rayet Guadalajara and Princeton celebrated with get together at the local pool. Rayet Guadalajara treated the Tigers to a dip in the pool and a meal of local cuisine that included lamb and calamari.
"I feel very fortunate to be here," said Wente. "It was nice to try new food and meet the members of the other team. Though language is sometimes a problem we were still able to communicate."
"It'?s amazing to come out of gym and be surrounded by mountains and on one side to have the moon just rising above the peaks and then on the other side to have herd off sheep being taken down the slope by dogs," said Thompson. "It's easy to feel as if you're lost in time, if it's the 21st century or the 17th."
"It's a magical setting," said Inge Radice, the senior athletic administrator traveling with the team. "You have the mountains, the castle and cathedral, the moon and the herd of sheep ... and Princeton scored more than 100 points."
The Tigers will face Calpe Aguas in Valencia on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. local time.
