PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's basketball team had not been swept in an Ivy League home weekend since 1966, and Ray Robins made sure that streak would not end at the hands of Yale. The senior scored 15 points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds to lead Princeton past Yale 56-49 in front of 5,694 at Jadwin Gym.
Robins made six of 10 field goal attempts, the same amount of makes as the entire Yale starting lineup. He scored 10 of his points in the first half, as Princeton shook off the effects of Friday night's loss to Brown and the loss of starter Spencer Gloger, who missed the game with an injury suffered the night before against Brown.
"Ray can score," Princeton coach John Thompson said. "What he's had to do for us this year is rebound, and that's what he did tonight. He has also really improved as a defender." Judson Wallace added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot in the win. Wallace and teammate Konrad Wysocki, a pair of 6-8 forwards who made for a strong 1-2 punch when Thompson played them together for various stretches, combined for 22 points and gave Princeton a solid presence near the basket. Wysocki scored 10 points off the bench, his third straight game scoring in double figures.
Will Venable added 12 points and played all 40 minutes, as did backcourt mate Ed Persia. The leading scorer for Princeton over the last four games, Persia gave a strong all-around performance with a game-high five assists to go along with three rebounds and two points.
Yale cut the deficit to three points on a jump shot by Matt Minoff with 10:20 remaining in the game. Following a free throw by Kyle Wente, Wysocki dunked on a backdoor pass from Wallace to open the lead to six points and force a Yale timeout. Robins followed with a dunk of his own on a fast break pass from Persia, and Venable made it a 10-point lead. Yale would get it back to within six points, but Princeton made its free throws late to clinch the win.
Princeton is now two games behind Penn, who rallied for a 73-66 victory over Brown tonight at the Palestra. Princeton will travel to Dartmouth Friday at 7:00; the Tigers defeated the Big Green 57-52 at Jadwin Gym earlier in the season.
