Claire Miller and Lauren Ehrlichman scored goals in the first five minutes of the second half and freshman Allison Nemeth had five saves in her collegiate debut as the Princeton field hockey team defeated Virginia, 3-1, in its season opener at Class of 1952 Stadium Friday night.
The Tigers (1-0) took advantage of two penalty corner situations early in the second half to take control of the game and give new head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn a victory in her coaching debut. Miller scored the go-ahead goal 2:17 into the second half on a nice feed in close from Lauren Quinn after Virginia's Logan Carr saved an initial scoring attempt. Ehrlichman then gave the Tigers insurance 2:13 later, tipping a shot from Alexis Martirosian past Carr for a 3-1 lead. Princeton then relied on its defense and the play of Nemeth, who made a point-blank save on a Katie Nicholson shot midway through the second half to keep the Tiger lead at 3-1. The Tigers outshot Virginia 16-10, including 9-4 in the decisive second half.
"I'm thought we played well and got contributions from everyone tonight," said Holmes-Winn, who took over the Princeton program this past spring. "It's nice to make some good plays against a solid team and that's what we were able to do to come away with a victory."
The victory was of the come-from-behind variety, as Virginia's Allie Flynn picked up a loose ball in front 21 minutes into the game and scored past Nemeth for a 1-0 Cavalier lead. The Tigers, who had dominated action for much of the early part of the game, were finally rewarded with 2:36 left in the first half when Lizzie Black rocketed a shot past Carr on a penalty corner situation to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
Black also had an assist on Ehrlichman's second-half goal, while Cory Picketts added an assist on Black's goal. The Tigers dominated the penalty-corner statistic, earning 15 for the game to just four for the Cavaliers.
Virginia, which had defeated Northeastern in its season opener Monday, fell to 1-1. Carr had four saves for the Cavaliers, who were meeting Princeton for the first time since the 1994 season.
Princeton plays Drexel at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday. The Tigers have now won 10 of their last 11 season openers.
