WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - If there's one thing for certain about the 2004 Princeton field hockey team, it's definitely that they never give up.
Just one week after scoring twice in the final three minutes to come from behind to beat Harvard, the Tigers scored to tie the game with just 30 seconds left in regulation and then got a Kelly Darling goal six minutes into the second overtime period on the way to a 2-1 victory over No. 13 William & Mary at Busch Field Saturday afternoon.
Just like last week, Princeton (7-8) used a penalty-corner situation to tie the game in the final moments. This time, Lizzie Black's unassisted goal on the Tigers' eighth corner of the game tied the score at 1-1 with 30 seconds on the clock. Despite numerous opportunities for each team, the game was scoreless until 2:10 remained in the second half. William & Mary's Gina Cimarelli scored her seventh goal of the season, with the assist coming from Ginny Sutton, and the Tribe (13-6) had a 1-0 lead.
Princeton, which defeated a ranked team for the second straight game, then staved off three William & Mary penalty-corner opportunities in overtime before Darling's game winner, which was assisted by senior Natalie Martirosian. The senior also scored the game winner late in regulation in Princeton's 5-4 victory over Boston University Oct. 1.
The Tigers outshot the Tribe 9-3 in the first 35 minutes of the game, but W&M goalie Heather Kibbee made five saves to help keep the game scoreless. The Tribe had seven shots in the 21 minutes of overtime play, but Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth had three of her seven saves in that time.
Princeton outshot the Tribe 18-16 for the game. Kibbee had nine saves for William & Mary, including three in overtime.
The Tigers play at seventh-ranked Old Dominion Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). ODU fell to William & Mary by a 2-1 score earlier this week.
