Judson Wallace, the first player at Princeton since 1979 to average 15 points and six rebounds per game for a single season, and Will Venable, who made a name for himself in 2003-04 with clutch offense and superb defense, were each named as first-team All-Ivy League selections in a vote of the league's eight head men's basketball coaches released Wednesday.
Wallace, who earned honorable mention All-Ivy status last season, has scored at least 20 points in 10 of his 26 games, including seven 20-point performances in Princeton's nine-game winning streak at the end of the regular season. The junior center from Atlanta, Ga., who averaged 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds during the regular season, also earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors twice. He scored 193 points (21.4 ppg) in Princeton's last nine games and had 114 points in the Tigers' first five games (22.8 ppg), ranking in the top 10 in the nation in scoring early in the season. The 6-10 Wallace, who started 26 games this season, also ranks third on the Tigers in three-point shots (24) and is shooting 38% from beyond the arc for the season. He had 24 points and eight rebounds in Princeton's overtime win at Penn that ended the regular season Tuesday and has four games this season with 26 or more points.
Venable played well during Princeton's non-conference season but exploded once league play started, scoring 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting at Brown in the opener and finishing in double figures in 12 of Princeton's 14 league games. The 6-3 guard shot an impressive 59.5% from the field in Ivy League games (66-for-111) and was one of just two players to be ranked among the league's top 12 in scoring, rebounding and assists.
The San Rafael, Calif., native, who has started all 27 games, is averaging 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds this season, both second on the team behind Wallace. Venable also leads the team in assists (78, 2.9 apg), steals (40, 1.5 spg) and minutes played (898, 33.3 mpg) in 2003-04.
Joining the two Princeton players on the All-Ivy first team are Ivy League Player of the Year Jason Forte from Brown, Cornell's Ka'Ron Barnes, who led the league in scoring, and Penn's Jeff Schiffner, a repeat selection on the first team along with Forte.
Making the All-Ivy second team were Brown's Patrick Powers and Jaime Kilburn, Penn's Tim Begley, Columbia's Matt Preston and Yale's Edwin Draughan. Penn's Adam Chubb and Harvard's Matt Stehle were the two honorable mention All-Ivy selections.
Dartmouth's Leon Pattman, who led all Ivy freshmen in scoring (13.2 ppg), was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Princeton earned two first-team All-Ivy selections for the first time since the 1998-99 season, when Brian Earl and Gabe Lewullis each made the first team. Wallace and Venable are the first Princeton players to earn first-team all-league status since Nate Walton in 2000-01.
