Providence, R.I. - Down 3-1 in the second period, the Princeton women's hockey team scored five unanswered goals to defeat Brown 6-3 at Meehan Auditorium Saturday afternoon. The win lifted Princeton into fourth in the ECAC standings and the Tigers can clinch the spot tomorrow with a win at Harvard.
Seniors Gretchen Anderson and Megan Van Beusekom led the Tigers to their 20th win of the season, a mark the Tigers have now reached in the past two seasons. Anderson posted four points in the game, including scoring three third period for a natural hat trick. Van Buesekom backstopped the Tigers to the win with 39 saves.
Brown outplayed the Tigers early as Jessica Link scored two first period goals to give the Bears a 2-0 lead after one period. Princeton cut the lead to one at 5:44 of the second when sophomore Heather Jackson tallied her 12th goal of the season. It was the first of three points on the night for Jackson. Senior Angela Gooldy and freshman Dina McCumber assisted on the goal. KathrynMoos reclaimed the two-goal advantage for Princeton at 14:23, but two goals late in the period for the Tigers knotted the game at three apiece as the second period ended. First at 16:26, Gooldy scored her fourth goal of the season and third in as many games on a blast from the point. The power play goal was assisted by Anderson. Princeton evened it up 2:20 later when sophomore Sarah Butsch posted her seventh goal of the year from senior Susan Hobson, who returned to the lineup today after missing several weeks with an injury, and junior Becky Stewart.
Scoring int he third was all Tigers, as Anderson took over. At 2:21 she scored what would turn out to be the game-winner when Jackson set her up at 2:21. The score stayed 4-3 for most of the period until Anderson scored an insurance tally at 18:06 from senior Lisa Rasmussen. Anderson completed the natural hat trick with an empty-net goal at 19:30.
Van Buesekom earned her 16th win of the year in net for the Tigers.
Princeton now stands fourth in the ECAC standings, one point ahead of Brown. The Tigers will either finish fourth or fifth and will definitely face Brown in next weekend ECAC quartefinals. The only question is who will host. The only way the Brown can surpass the Tigers in the standings is with a win tomorrow over Yale and a Princeton loss to Harvard. If the Tigers win or tie at Harvard, they will host next weekend at Baker Rink. If the two teams finish tied in the standings, Princeton wins all tiebreakers over Brown.
