Paula Infante scored three times, including two goals early in the second half as Maryland pulled away, as the second-ranked Terrapins defeated Princeton, 7-1, in a field hockey game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Friday night.
Infante was forced to the sideline for five minutes due to a yellow card midway through the second half, but came back off the bench and scored her third goal of the game with just over 11 minutes left to give the Terps (8-0) a 4-1 lead. Janneke van Leeuwen, Tiffany Marsh and Anja Boettcher would then score in the game's final seven minutes for Maryland, which has now outscored its opponents 39-4 through eight games this season.
Princeton (1-4) was certainly Maryland's toughest opponent in weeks despite the final score, particularly in an exciting first half that saw the Terps head to the locker room with a 2-1 advantage. Maryland led 2-0 late in the half after Infante's first goal, but Tiger junior Hillary Schmidt's rebound goal on a penalty-corner situation pulled the Tigers within 2-1. Princeton outshot Maryland 9-8 in the first 35 minutes and finished the game with 14 shots, as many as the Terps had allowed in total in their first seven games of the season. Maryland outshot the Tigers 13-5 in the decisive second half and 21-14 overall for the game.
Terp goalie Christina Restivo had 11 saves, including several diving stops on Princeton scoring opportunities while the game was still in the balance. 12 of Princeton's 14 shots were on goal, including three on penalty-corner situations from Lizzie Black that were all either blocked or saved by Restivo.
The Terps scored on three penalty-corner situations in the second half, and van Leeuwen's second-half goal also came as a result of a penalty corner.
Princeton goalie Juliana Simon had six saves while playing all 70 minutes.
Maryland's win was its seventh straight over Princeton dating back to the 1999 season.
