NEW YORK - Maren Ford scored an unassisted goal just before halftime to put Princeton ahead and Lizzie Black and Alexis Martirosian added second-half goals as the Princeton field hockey team defeated Columbia, 3-1, in an Ivy League game at Wien Stadium Friday night.
The win, which broke a three-game losing streak for the Tigers (2-5, 2-1 Ivy), pushed Princeton to 8-0 all-time against the Lions (2-5, 1-1 Ivy). The Tigers have outscored Columbia 41-5 in those eight meetings.
Ford's goal came with just over five minutes left in the first half, and the Tigers would add insurance right away on a penalty-corner situation 5:56 into the second half. Hillary Schmidt's push was stopped by Natalie Martirosian, and Lizzie Black drove a shot into the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead.
Alexis Martirosian made it 3-0 Princeton with just less than 15 minutes remaining thanks to an assist from her sister Natalie, her second assist of the second half.
Columbia's Diana Day scored with 1:04 left in the game to provide the final margin.
Princeton outshot the Lions 18-2 and had 11 penalty corners to just two for Columbia. Lion goalie Kristina George had 11 saves to help keep her team in the game.
The Tigers play at Penn State Tuesday night. The Lions defeated Princeton in last year's NCAA tournament first round.
