NEW YORK - It was an evening of strong performances Saturday night for the Princeton men's indoor track team, which won 10 of 18 events against Rider, La Salle and Lafayette at the Armory Invitational at the New York Armory.
As usual, the Tigers were particularly strong in distance running and in the field events. Princeton also got victories in the 60-meter hurdles from Ray Lenihan, who had a strong time of 8.02, and in the 400 meters from Rich Stewart, who ran the quarter-mile in 48.30.
In the mile run, Princeton's David Nightengale and Ben Stern finished 1-2, with each runner finishing in just over 4:10. The Tigers also took the top five places in the 5,000 meters, with Frank McCreery winning the race in 14:41.02.
In the 800 meters, Alexis Tingan fought off a spirited effort from Rider's Dave Lado to win the race in 1:53.44.
In the field, the Tigers won the weight throw, pole vault, long jump and high jump events. Matt McNamara's heave of 56 feet, 10 inches won the weight throw, while Kyle Whitaker was the only pole vaulter to clear a height, jumping nearly 15-7. Dwaine Banton won the long jump easily, leaping better than 24 feet, while Mike Weishuhn was the only high jumper to clear the two-meter mark.
Princeton also won the 4X400 relay event, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Rider.
