Hillary Schmidt was one of four seniors playing her final regular-season home game for the Princeton field hockey team Friday night. So her sister Paige decided it would be nice to send her older sister off with a memorable game.
Paige scored three times, including one on a penalty-corner attempt that came directly from her sister early in the second half, to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 win over Rutgers at Class of 1952 Stadium and get Princeton back to the .500 mark at 8-8.
The Tigers outshot Rutgers (7-11) 23-5 and had 15 penalty corners, scoring off three of those opportunities. Schmidt's first goal also came from a penalty-corner situation 17 minutes into the game, while her third goal with 15 minutes left was another individual effort on a penalty corner.
Sarah Reinprecht had the assist on Schmidt's first goal, while Nicole Ng had the assist on the final one.
Lauren Ehrlichman, also a senior, got the Tigers on the board early 4:36 into the game. She stole a pass near midfield and took it from there, rifling a shot past Rutgers goalie Rosalyn Wentko for a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Freshman Katie Kinzer also had a goal for Princeton, scoring off a rebound attempt late in the first half to give the Tigers a 3-0 halftime lead.
Wentko had nine saves for Rutgers, which did have seven penalty-corner attempts for the game. Juliana Simon had two saves in relief duty for Princeton in the second half. The senior class of Hillary Schmidt, Ehrlichman, Maren Ford and Liz Miller was honored prior to the game. The class has won three Ivy League championships and will make its third NCAA tournament appearance this season.
Princeton concludes its regular season Friday night at Penn before NCAA tournament selections are announced Nov. 8.
