The Princeton women's hockey team needed a pick-me-up after losing a heartbreaker with just one second left on the clock Friday night against Mercyhurst. The Tigers got that boost in exciting fashion Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink.
When Annie Greenwood shoved in a rebound of a Kim Pearce shot just 23 seconds into overtime, giving the No. 7 Tigers a 4-3 victory over the No. 6 Lakers Saturday, Princeton had a win over a top-10 team for the second straight weekend and a split for its home weekend.
Pearce controlled the puck near the red line and sent a long shot on net that was saved by Mercyhurst goalie Laura Hosier. But Hosier couldn't control the rebound, and a sliding Greenwood scored her fourth goal of the season to end it.
Despite being outshot 39-23 for the game, including 28-11 in the first two periods, Princeton (5-3-2) found itself ahead 3-2 early in the third period thanks to two goals in the first 3:44 of the period. The first came on the power play just 1:32 in, when Sarah Butsch scored her second goal of the year to tie the score at 2-2. The second, which came just over two minutes later, was a bit luckier. Dina McCumber was simply dumping the puck toward the Mercyhurst net from the blue line, but the puck bounced awkwardly and through the legs of Hosier and gave Princeton a 3-2 advantage.
Mercyhurst (7-6-1) used the power play to send the game into overtime, scoring with just more than five minutes left in the third period after Princeton's Katherine Dineen was sent off for cross checking. Jill Nugent's third goal of the year, assisted by Stephanie Jones and Julia Colizza, was a sprawling attempt from just outside the goalmouth. The Lakers scored first after a scoreless first period, getting a power-play goal from Ashley Pendleton from the point 4:28 into the second, but Princeton responded on the power play five minutes later. Marykate Oakley sent a pass toward the crease that was redirected by Laura Watt, and McCumber shoved it past Hosier to tie the game at 1-1.
Stefanie Bourbeau then gave Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead late in the second period on a four-on-four situation, with the assist going to Valerie Chouinard.
The teams combined for four power-play goals on eight opportunities.
Roxanne Gaudiel stopped 36 of the 39 Mercyhurst shots to earn her fifth win of the season. She had at least 10 saves in each of the first three periods of the game.
Princeton continues a 10-game homestand next weekend, hosting Cornell and Colgate at Baker Rink.
