PRINCETON, N.J. - Kim Pearce decided to let her teammates do the scoring on Friday night against Cornell, but the junior forward made sure she was in on just about every scoring chance anyway in a 7-0 rout of the Big Red (2-7-0, 0-5-0 ECACHL) by the Princeton women's ice hockey team (6-3-2, 3-1-1) at Baker Rink.
Entering the night as Princeton's leading goal scorer with four, Pearce's six assists tie her for the second most in Princeton women's hockey history and are the most in a game since the record holder, Katherine Issel, had seven against RIT in 1992. The 7-0 win was the largest margin of victory for the Tigers since Feb. 26 of last season in a 9-2 win over Union and was the largest margin of victory in a shutout since Princeton's 8-0 win over Boston College on Nov. 30, 2003.
The Tigers outshot Cornell 25-14 and erased seven power-play chances for the Big Red. Goalie Roxanne Gaudiel saved all eight of the shots to come between the pipes before giving way to freshman Kristen Young for the third period. Young saved all six shots on goal in the final 20 minutes.
Princeton's three first-period goals came from Marykate Oakley, Christine Foster and Laura Watt. Brittany Salmon had a goal each in the second and third periods, while Annie Greenwood had a second-period goal and Heather Jackson had her first goal of the season in the third period. Aside from Pearce, multi-point scorers on the night included Oakley, who had a goal and two assists, Salmon, who had two goals, and Watt and Foster, who each had a goal and an assist. For Cornell, Beth Baronick made 17 saves while allowing six goals and Sarah McConnachie allowed one goal while making one save.
The Tigers return to Baker Rink on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tilt against Colgate.
