The Princeton men's basketball team has been chosen to finish in third place in the league standings in 2005-06 according to the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll released Tuesday.
Princeton's 83 points trailed Harvard, which finished with 96 points, and Penn, which earned 128 points and was chosen to win the league title for a second straight year. Penn was a unanimous choice of all 16 voters in the poll.
Cornell (70), Yale (67), Brown (57), Dartmouth (41) and Columbia (34) round out the preseason poll, voted on by two members of the media that cover each of the league's eight schools.
Princeton opens its 2005-06 season Nov. 14 when it hosts Drexel in the Preseason NIT at Jadwin Gym. The Ivy basketball season begins officially Nov. 8 when Cornell meets Saint Francis (PA) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Syracuse.
The Tigers finished in sixth place in Ivy League play last season with a 6-8 league record. Princeton was 13-1 in Ivy play two seasons ago on the way to its 25th league title and 23rd NCAA tournament berth.
Princeton has won or shared 25 Ivy titles, while Penn has won or shared 23 league crowns. The other six Ivy schools combined have won or shared nine league championships.
Either Princeton (nine times) or Penn (eight times) has earned the league's NCAA tournament automatic berth in each of the last 17 seasons. Cornell, in 1988, was the last Ivy school other than Princeton or Penn to make the NCAA tournament.
