HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Princeton men's basketball team hadn't been to this part of Central New York in nearly 24 years. After Saturday, it's unlikely the Tigers will want to return to Colgate any time in the near future either.
Alvin Reed scored all 16 of his points in the second half, including consecutive three-pointers as part of an 11-2 Colgate run that put the game away, and Kyle Chones had 11 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Raiders to a 62-39 victory over Princeton before 702 at Cotterell Court.
In holding the Tigers (1-3) to their lowest point total since a 62-38 loss to Penn in February 2002, Colgate (4-3) took a 21-11 lead at halftime and led by double digits for the final eight minutes of the game, equalling its biggest lead of 23 points as time expired. The Raiders shot 60% in the second half and 51% for the game, including an 8 for 15 performance from three-point range.
Cold-shooting Princeton had cut its deficit to 37-29 with just under nine minutes left, but Patrick Ekeruo missed the second of two free throws and then the front end of a one-and-one opportunity on Princeton's next possession. Chones then had a putback of a missed shot on the other end to put the Raiders back ahead by double digits, and Reed's two three-point shots two minutes later, the final one banking off the backboard near the end of the shot clock, gave Colgate a 48-31 lead with 5:41 left.
Princeton, which shot just 33% for the game, had just one basket in the final 8:18 of the first half, a Noah Savage three-point shot, on the way to its 21-11 halftime deficit. The Tigers made just five of 19 first-half shots (26%) and had seven first-half turnovers. Savage played all 40 minutes and led the Tigers in scoring for the fourth straight game, scoring 13 points. Patrick Ekeruo tied a season high with eight points despite being in foul trouble for most of the game, while Geoff Kestler had a season-best eight points.
Colgate made 13 of its 17 second-half free-throw attempts to help pull away. The Raiders also outrebounded the Tigers 34-22, including 19-9 in the second half.
Princeton made just 6 of its 11 free-throw attempts for the game.
The Tigers pulled to within single digits by midway through the second half thanks to a 9-3 run that began around the 14 minute mark. Kestler's three-pointer with 11:27 left made it 34-25, and another three by Savage with 9:28 left made the score 37-28 Colgate.
Princeton made just 5 of its 20 three-point shots overall.
The Tigers host Temple Tuesday night at Jadwin Gym to begin a three-game homestand, which also includes games against Wyoming Saturday night and Monmouth Dec. 14.
