New Haven, Conn. - The Princeton women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Yale Wednesday night at Ingalls Rink. Yale's win secured the final home-ice playoff spot for the Bulldogs and relegated the Tigers to the road for the first round of the ECAC playoffs when the postseason begins in two weekends.
After an even first period, the teams were scoreless. Yale outshot the Tigers 7-6, but both goaltenders, Princeton junior Roxanne Gaudiel and Yale's Sarah Love were equal to the task, kicking away all 13 combined shots.
Just as in the season's previous meeting, a 2-1 Yale win at Princeton in November, the Tigers put the first goal on the scoreboard. The goal came from freshman Sonja Novak, who returned to the Tiger lineup after missing the last five games with an injury. Junior co-captain Heather Jackson assisted Novak's first career goal, with came at 6:05 of the period. Princeton's lead lasted eight minutes until Helen Resor evened the score for the Bulldogs. Jenna Spring then gave Yale the lead with 30 seconds left in the period on the power play. Yale outshot the Tigers 16-8 in the period and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Ali Turney's goal 21 seconds into the third period proved to be the game-winner as it gave the Bulldogs a two-goal cushion and forced the Tigers to begin to press offensively. Princeton eventually chipped a goal off the lead on the power play with 4:31 remaining. Sophomore Laura Watt scored the goal, which was her sixth of the season. Sophomore Dina McCumber recorded an assist on the tally.
That was as close as the Tigers could get, however, as Deena Caplette scored into the empty Princeton net with 30 seconds remaining to seal the 4-2 victory.
Yale outshot the Tigers 17-8 in the period and 40-22 for the game. Love finished the night with 20 saves for the win, while Gaudiel made 36 saves in the loss.
Princeton returns home for its final two games of the regular season this weekend when it meets Union on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Princeton is currently tied for fifth in the ECAC standings with Colgate and Brown. The three teams will finish the season in spots five through seven and will all play on the road in the first round of the playoffs.
