PRINCETON - The Princeton men's heavyweight and women's open crews, both of which are currently ranked No. 1 in their respective national polls, will race on Lake Carnegie Saturday, instead of their scheduled location at Rutgers. The change is due to weather concerns for the weekend, although it will not impact the men's lightweight race.
The men's lightweights will start the day at 10 a.m. with a third varsity race against Columbia. The Lions and Tigers will also race the 1F (10:20), 2V (10:40) and 1V (11:00) during the morning.
At noon, there will be a coxswains meeting for the heavyweights and open women. The following is the remainder of the day's schedule:
1:12 - 3V women
1:24 - 2F men
1:36 - 1N women
1:48 - 1F men
2:00 - 2V women
2:12 - 2V men
2:24 - 1V women
2:36 - 1V men
2:48 - 3V "B" women
The move to Princeton will allow the local faithful to watch a pair of No. 1 teams. The heavyweight men edged out the University of California at Berkeley for the top spot; both teams received three first-place votes, but Princeton ended with 189 total points in the poll, while California received 187. The Harvard Crimson is third with 179 points.
"I think we have the athletes here to have high expectations about our performances," head coach Curtis Jordan said. "It is always a pleasure to be ranked No. 1, but our goal is to be there at the end of the season."
The same feeling is held by women's coach Lori Dauphiny, whose team won the Eastern championship in 2004 and reached the final of the Royal Henley. Princeton gained 20 of 23 first-place votes and is far ahead of No. 2 Yale in the poll.
"Although it is nice to be ranked number No. 1, I have been around long enough to know ranking does not mean much," Dauphiny said. "It is early in the season and there are many fast crews in our league and in the country. It is a good way to start the season but there is a long way to go."
