Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team used three second-half goals to snap a scoreless tie and post a 3-0 shut out of Columbia in Ivy League action Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. Sophomore Paige Schmidt scored the game-winner 4:45 into the second half as Princeton improved to 3-4 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League.
Columbia started the game strong and took the game's first five shots on a pair of penalty corners in the game's first five minutes. From that point on, momentum began to swing Princeton's way as the Tigers controlled things for the rest of the first half, outshooting the Lions 10-2 over the next 30 minutes and having eight penalty corner attempts.
Despite several good chances, Princeton was unable to crack Columbia's Kristina George who made several excellent saves in the half. Princeton's best chance came from senior Maren Ford with 10 minutes left in the half, but a Columbia defender made a great play to keep the ball out of the net after it had passed the goalkeeper.
Princeton continued to pressure as the second half got underway and wasted little time in scoring the decisive goal. Off a penalty corner, sophomore Nicole Ng slid a backhand pass to Paige Schmidt who blasted a shot by George. For Schmidt, it was her first tally of the season despite the fact that she leads the team with 28 shots on goal, including 11 in today's game.
Princeton extended its lead four minutes later when the Tigers took advantage of another corner. Paige Schmidt's initial shot was saved, but freshman Leah Hoagland followed up and after a shot was saved she fed senior Hillary Schmidt on the side of the cage who directed it in for her second goal of the season. Princeton closed the scoring late in the game when Ng scored her second goal of the season and made it a three-point afternoon. Ford played the ball into the circle and Ng redirected it by George.
Princeton outshot the Lions 25-14 in the game. Sixteen of Princeton's shots were directed on goal. Princeton had 14 penalty corners in the game to Columbia's seven.
Junior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made five saves to post the win for Princeton and record her second straight shutout in Ivy League play.
Princeton returns to action Sunday afternoon against Albany at 1 p.m.
