Top-Ranked Maryland Rallies Past Princeton
October 10, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- No. 1 Maryland scored 3:44 into the second half to break 1-1 tie and added two more second-half goals to defeat the Princeton field hockey team 4-1 on Tuesday night at Class of '52 Stadium.
For nearly the entire first half of Tuesday night's game, the Tigers withstood the potent offense of the top-ranked Terps and jumped to an early lead. After Maryland held the ball in the Princeton zone, the Tiger countered with junior Paige Schmidt controlling the ball in the Maryland circle. Schmidt passed the ball to sophomore Holly McGarvie who fired a shot on the Maryland net that freshman Tina Bortz directed into the goal. Once the ball passed Maryland goalkeeper Kathryn Masson, Bortz lunged for the ball with one hand on her stick and directed it into the open goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Play bounced back-and-forth in both ends through the rest of the first half Maryland outshot the Tigers 8-4 in the period and broke through with 0.1 seconds on the clock. Maryland had a penalty corner that Princeton broke up, but Ameliet Rischen carried the ball back into the circle and fired the ball on net where Nicole Muracco tipped it through the legs of Princeton senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth.
Princeton played strong defensively in the opening half as Nemeth made four saves, and got some help as well as sophomore Sarah Reinprecht's defensive save at 9:25 saved a sure Maryland goal.
Maryland scored the go-ahead goal 3:44 into the second half on the rush. Muracco received a long pass and ran into the circle, scoring her second goal of the game with a shot from the far side.
The Terps made the lead 3-1 four minutes later when Susie Row scored on a penalty corner attempt. Janneke van Leewun played the ball in to Berber Rischen who fed Rowe for her fifth goal of the season. Kim Ziegler added an insurance goal late when her crossing pass was deflected in off the stick of a Princeton defender.
Nemeth finished the game with nine saves while Masson made three saves in the Maryland net. Maryland outshot Princeton 17-6 and outcornered the Tigers 9-4.
Princeton falls to 6-4 overall with the loss while Maryland is now 13-1.
The game will be broadcast by tape delay on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. on CSTV and will re-air throughout next week.
Princeton resumes its Ivy League schedule this Saturday when it hosts Brown at 12 noon. The game will pit the league's two unbeaten teams.
