Tigers Improve to 5-0 in Ivy Play with Win Over Brown
October 14, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Junior Paige Schmidt had a hand in four goals, scoring twice and adding two assists, to lead the Princeton field hockey team to a 6-1 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon in Ivy League action at Class of '52 Stadium.
Both teams had chances early but neither team was able to score until the Tigers took advantage of two penalty corners in the final five minutes of the half. At 31:39 Princeton opened the scoring when sophomore Holly McGarvie redirected Schmidt's blast from the top of the circle for her sixth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later the lead was 2-0 when Schmidt's blast from the circle hit the wood at the back of the net. Junior Micaela Vie Brock assisted on the goal.
Down by two goals entering the second half, Brown pressured Princeton for the first 10 minutes of the second half, firing seven shots and having three corners in the span. Brown finally broke through at 44:38 when Stacy Gugliotta scored on a rebound. Despite the goal, Princeton goalkeeper Allison Nemeth kept the Tigers in the game during the Brown rally, making six of her eight saves in the game in that 10-minute span.
Moving within a goal was as close as Brown would get as Princeton scored four unanswered goals for the 6-1 final. Princeton regained the two-goal advantage three minutes after Brown scored when sophomore Kristin Schwab scored on the rush. Her first goal of the season came in just her second appearance of the season as she missed several games while rehabbing an ACL injury suffered last spring.
Freshman Kaitlin Donovan made the score 4-1 in the 57th minute. She received a pass from Schmidt just in front of the goal, then stepped around her and backhanded a shot for her third goal of the season. Junior Sarah Yuki extended the lead at 66:48 with her fourth goal of the year and Schmidt capped the scoring with a goal with 2:21 remaining that was a carbon copy of her first goal of the game.
Nemeth and Brown's Kristen Hodavance each made eight saves in the game. Princeton became the first team this season to score more than two goals against Brown and the first Ivy League team to score against them.
The win moved Princeton to a perfect 5-0 in the Ivy League this season and keeps them atop the Ivy League standings. Previously the Tigers were tied atop the league standings with Brown, which now stands at 4-1 in league play. Princeton is 7-5 overall while Brown fell to 7-3.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., when it hosts Hofstra at Class of '52 Stadium.
