Hofstra Rallies for 3-2 Win at Princeton
October 15, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Hofstra's Reyna Farnum snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Pride to a 3-2 win over the Princeton field hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
All five goals in the game came in a 16-minute span midway through the game. The first came late in the opening half, with the next four coming early in the second half.
Hofstra outshot the Tigers 6-5 in each half and broke the scoreless tie on its final shot of the first half on a penalty corner. Charlia Wagner started the corner by pushing the ball to Farnum, who left it for Kara McEneaney, whose shot skipped into the Tiger goal to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead.
Princeton came out for the second half and tied the score 4:05 into the half when sophomore Kristin Schwab found the ball on the far side of the goal and slid the ball beneath Hofstra goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait for her second goal of the season.
The Tigers then took their first lead of the game at 41:39 when junior Paige Schmidt scored her fourth goal of the season. The goal came on a penalty corner with junior Micaela Vie Brock picking up the assist.
Princeton's lead lasted 2:28 before Wagner evened the score for Hofstra. In transition, Hofstra carried the ball into the Tiger circle where Wagner controlled down low. Wagner attempted a shot that Princeton goalkeeper Allison Nemeth came out to save, but Wagner was able to collect the rebound and lofted it high into the top of the goal to knot the score at 2-2.
The Pride then took the lead at 49:58 when Farnum scored her game-winning goal. Farnum played a ball into the circle that was blocked right back to her. By this time she had reached the circle and fired a shot that found the back of the cage.
From there Hofstra held on despite a lot of Princeton pressure on the Pride goal. Princeton had two corners and two good shot attempts in the final five minutes, but Cowperthwait came up with two saves as Hofstra held on for the win.
Nemeth finished the game with four saves for the Tigers while Cowperthwait had four for Hofstra.
Princeton fell to 7-6 overall with the loss while Hofstra improved to 10-4. Princeton, a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League play, returns to action for a league game against Harvard next Saturday at 12 noon.
