Friday the 13th Marks the Beginning of Yet Another Basketball Season
October 12, 2006 | Men's Basketball
In 2006, Friday the 13th of October isn't just the last of two supposedly scary Fridays this calendar year. It's also the day that marks the beginning of college basketball practice.
Head coach Joe Scott and the Princeton men's basketball team hit the court for their first practice Friday night with another Friday night in mind, Nov. 10. Only four weeks to the day from Friday the 13th, the Tigers open their season against Loyola-Chicago at the BCA Classic at Ohio State.
Entering his third season as Princeton head coach, Scott has four starters back from the last time the Tigers hit the Jadwin Gym court as a team, a thrilling 60-59 overtime victory against Penn in the 2005-06 regular-season finale March 7.
Senior Justin Conway, who made the game-winning basket in that game, joins classmate Luke Owings as frontcourt returnees for the Tigers. Both earned honorable mention All-Ivy accolades a year ago. Juniors Noah Savage and Kyle Koncz, who combined to make more than 100 three-pointers a season ago, are also back.
A large and talented freshman class joins the mix in 2006-07, not to mention the contributions expected from experienced players like Edwin Buffmire, Michael Strittmatter and Kevin Steuerer, all of whom played key roles in Princeton's 10-4 Ivy League finish a year ago.
Princeton, which has its first seven games away from Jadwin Gym, will play three games at the BCA Classic Nov. 10-12. The Tigers open their home season Dec. 6 with a game against Lehigh.
After a 3-12 start a year ago, the Tigers rebounded in the second half of the year to finish with nine wins in their last 12 games and in second place in the Ivy League.
